Fiji surfing holidays are highly regarded amongst the international surf community as being of exceptional quality surf with few crowds and a laid back atmosphere. The rave here is exciting reef breaks (not for beginners), secluded locations and the traditional Fijian hospitality. Most reef breaks around the islands are accessible only by boat so whilst this keeps the crowds down, it also puts the cost up.
Windsurfing & Kite Surfing
The best place for both windsurfing and kite surfing is on nananu-i-Ra Island off the north coast of Viti Levu where winds blow in consistantly between March and December, with the winter months of May to October the most piopular when Australia and New Zealand surfers have winter back home, yet Fiji's winter remains beautifully warm and sunny.

Several good surf shops can be found in Nadi Town and Suva. Boards are reasonably priced and there's a good selection of accessories. Specialist surf resorts have spare boards for rent.
Malolo Barrier Reef, Mamanuca Islands
Internationally famous Namotu Left and Cloudbreak in the Mamanuca Islands are recognised as the most challenging surf breaks in the South Pacific. Both are reef breaks and are not for beginners. Desperation and Swimming Pools add to the variety of breaks in the area. There are two small resorts on tiny coral islands just off Namotu Reef which cater exclusively to surfers. The best way to surf these breaks is to stay at one of the island resorts around Malolo or along the coast south of Nadi. The resorts here all organize boat trips to the breaks although they have limited rights to the big surfing breaks but free access to other breaks along the reef.
Plantation Island Resort, Mamanucas F$ 309 - 636 per couple
Plantation Island Resort is the second largest of the Mamanuca Island resorts and is set along a picturesque beach with excellent swimming lagoon. Located on a coarse sand beach with good offshore snorkelling, the resort offers a range of rooms from a dorm lodge to family beach bungalows.
Castaway Island Resort, Mamanucas F$ 870 - 999 per couple

Beqa Lagoon
There are some other excellent breaks around Beqa in the Southern Islands. Frigates Passage, a left-hand break in the middle of the ocean, has a growing reputation amongst surfers for its reliable big barrels and long rides. Serua Rights is a long right hand break with a hollow inside section across the passage and Pipe is another left-hander with a mid to high tide break. There are two very basic surf camps on Yanuca Island, off Beqa about a 50-minute boat ride to the waves. Kadavu also in the Southern islands, has some excellent breaks off its western tip, notably the challenging and reliable King Kong break. There are several other good breaks around the point including a small beach break for beginners.
Around Viti Levu
The best beach breaks for beginners are on the south coast of Viti Levu, the main island. The wild ocean off the Sigatoka Sandunes has the most reliable beach breaks although undercurrents can be dangerous. Natadola also has some small beach breaks. There is much better surfing off the coast at Hideaway although this is a reef break and not for beginners. The Hideaway break is best 1 hour each side of high tide and undercurrents can be dangerous.
