Suva, the capital of Fiji with a population of around 150,000, is a wet cosmopolitan city on the south east tip of Viti Levu about a three hour drive from Nadi Airport. The city is set on a pretty harbour backed by high tropical mountains but without a beach and mostly avoided by tourists although it is frequently visited by business travellers. Downtown Suva has plenty of historical buildings amongst the rapid addition of high rise office blocks and there's a good selection of hotels aimed mostly at business travellers. Suva has the best shops, restaurants and bars in Fiji. Suva makes an alternative attraction to spend a day or night and to take in the other side of South Sea life - a rather hardened and somewhat edgy version of paradise.
